A Tribute to the Public Library | I hear you’re endangered

It seems like forever ago. I’d spend my time during lunch in the school library. It was an harmonious adventure discovering life vicariously through characters in other literature. The library acted as a second sanctuary. A greater sense of belonging and peace away from people. Of course, for a portion of my upbringing, information wasn’t readily available in hand held devices, making visits to libraries necessary for research. Now less than so, looking back I wouldn’t change the convenience.
Past the days of schooling, I now visit the library as a change of environment for creative brainstorming. Recently, I went there to collaborate on a website project. It’s a welcomed familiarity to walk through doors unchanging. Books may vary, placement of tables, and more private working spaces but the scent of old & new pages paired with the sound of quiet offered by the ambiance of the library, never wavers.
Libraries, and even the online resources they provide, are facing potential jeopardy due to budget cuts and other challenges. Some believe them to not be as necessary as they once were. However, libraries continue to serve an important role in communities and access to information. Serving as centers for learning and engagement, libraries provide free educational resources and support for diverse populations. They offer safe spaces for collaboration and foster imagination.
A Library is an essential component:
Libraries offer a vast collection of books, periodicals, and other materials for all ages and backgrounds.
They offer free educational resources, including online learning platforms and computer access.
Support lifelong learning through access to resources and programs for adults, including language classes, career resources, and online courses.
Promote literacy, particularly for children and young adults, through programs like summer reading programs and early literacy initiatives.
They host a variety of programs, events, and activities, including story-times, workshops, and book clubs, promoting social interaction and cultural exchange.
Libraries foster a sense of community and belonging, strengthening social cohesion and civic engagement.
Once in a while, skip the coffee shops and book stores. Pay homage to and don’t neglect your local public library. They are more than just communal centers for the studious.
Love above all,
Alisia Latoi
